タケ： 今週は全米オープンですね！全米オープンはUSGAが主催しているわけですが、USGAとPGAツアーとの違いはなんですか？

トム： OK！PGAツアーはツアープロゴルファーがたくさん所属していて、トーナメント等のいろんなイベントを主催し、世界のベストゴルファーを皆さんに観てもらう為のあらゆる活動をしています。

タケ： ほうほう。

トム： USGAはゴルフというゲームの役割やルールのことなどを管理していて、ジュニアやシニアなど其々の世界でのナンバーワンを決定する為のナショナルチャンピオンシップもいくつか開催しています。今週の場合はアメリカのベストゴルファー決定戦、いや、アメリカだけでなく世界中から選手が集まっている大会ですね。

タケ： USGAとPGAツアーの関係は…良好ですか？

トム： USGAがルール変更を決定、ロングパターでのアンカリングの問題が勃発してますが、それでも関係は良好ですよ。

タケ： そう、アンカリングですよ。

トム： 皆さんもご存じと思いますが、選手たちは新しいルールに従わなければならない事態になっています。PGAツアーはまだ何も決定を下していなくて、私もどうなるのかわかりません。しかし選手に大きな影響を与える事態になった現在も良好な関係は続いていますよ。PGAツアーのコミッショナー、ティム・フィンチェムとUSGAのトップは常に連絡を取り合っています。ゴルフ界の発展のために共に歩んでいるパートナーだと認識しています。

タケ： アンカリングに関してはいつ決定が下されそうですか？USGAに従うかPGAツアーは独自のルールを作るかどうなりそうですか？

トム： まだわからないです。まずは選手会の意見が出て、そして議会の承認があってそれから、、どうするか決めるでしょう。まだわかりません。

タケ： なるほど了解しました。ところで今週は全米オープンですね。

トム： はい。私の大好きな大会です。スコアがハイ（悪い）で！

タケ： （笑）

トム： この大会は毎年難しいのですが、選手たちが苦戦するのを観るのって楽しいですね。

タケ： そのとおり！（笑）

トム： ボギーにダブルボギー、それに昨日はあのセルヒオ（ガルシア）がクアドラプルボギーを打ちましたよ。年に1回くらいは選手たちに「パー」に挑んでもらうような試合があって良いと思います。今週はミケルソンが調子良いですね。彼は未だに今大会優勝がないのですが、2位がこれまでになんと5回もあります。これは大会記録です。もし今週彼が勝ったら大変なドラマになりますよ！

タケ： 今週はフィールドが156人。多いですよね？

トム： それはデイライトの関係ですよ。日が長い夏の間はフィールドが多くなります。この大会はとにかく民主的で、誰にでも開かれているところが売りです。ローハンディキャッパーであれば誰でも参加できます。日本からもクオリファイを通して4～5人出場しているはずです。あなただって素晴らしい選手でしょうから、挑戦できます。実力さえあればメリオンでタイガーやマキロイ、ミケルソンらと戦えるのです。

タケ： イイね！トライしてみましょうか（笑）

トム： では来年！（笑）

タケ： いや、実はフロリダに住んでいた頃、毎年挑戦していたのですが通れませんでした。

トム： 嗚呼。その痛み、わかりますね（笑）

タケ： （笑）

トム： 私も何度もトライしましたがダメでした。

タケ： トムさん、時間になりました。また来月よろしくお願いします。

トム： 来月は全英オープンの週にお話ししましょう。ミュアフィールドも過酷なゴルフが観られると思いますよ。楽しみですね！

Take: Hello Tom!!

Tom: Hi Take!

Take: It's U.S. Open week!! First of all we'd like to know what’s the difference between USGA and PGA Tour?

Tom: OK. PGA Tour is an association of professional golfers who make living as a tour pro. We organize stuff so to see the best golfers in the world.

Take: Uh-huh.

Tom: The USGA is the United States Golf Association and they control things like role to the game, they make the rules, and they run a couple of national championships. So they determine who’s the best golfers for juniors and seniors and in this case just the best player in the United States. But it’s not only for the folks in the United states, it’s open to every player around the world.

Take: So, How is the relationship between you and USGA?

Tom: Well, It’s very good, even right now when a,, USGA is changing one of the rules, the long putters and anchoring putting.

Take: Yes anchoring.

Tom: And so you know, our players are going to have to comply with that. The PGA tour hasn’t decided what it’s going to do yet. And I don’t know what they are going to do.

Take: Uh-huh.

Tom: But even with them changing the rule that will affect players, it’s a very good relationship. The commissioner of the PGA tour, Tim Finchem is constantly in communication with the heads of the USGA and we like to think that we all work together to make golf better sports.

Take: So Tom, Do you know when you guys will make decision on anchoring? Will you follow USGA or you guys make another rule for PGA tour?

Tom: We have not decided yet. What happens is we have a players get together and then we have a policy board, and they will decide how to precede next. But right now, I don’t know what PGA tour is going to do.

Take: OK. So how about this week. USGA’s tournament.

Tom: Yes. This week is one of my favorite tournaments of the year, because the scores are always so high.

Take: (laugh)

Tom: Tournament always plays so hard.

Take: Uh-huh.

Tom: And it’s kind of fun to watch players struggle.

Take: That’s right (laugh)

Tom: It’s fun to watch them bogeys and double bogeys and,,

Take: (laugh)

Tom: I mean Sergio made a quadruple bogey yesterday.

Take: Yes. Uh-huh.

Tom: For one week out of the year I think it’s OK and challenge the players so that where Par is a good score on every hole. And Phil Mickelson looks like he’s doing a good job and you know he’s coming second’s five times, a record five times in this tournament without winning it. He’s in the lead right now and who knows, there’s gonna be a huge story if he holds on to win.

Take: 156 player this year. That’s many.

Tom: It’s because of the day light. We have less field in the winter time. What’s interesting about this tournament is it’s very democratic. It’s open to anyone, low handicapper, you can try and qualify, they had a qualifier in Japan, and four or five players from over there made it. And it’s just a,, you know, someone like a,,, you I’m sure you are a very good golfer. If you are good enough, you can qualify and you can play at Merion against Tiger and Rory and Phil.

Take: Beautiful. I might try that. (laugh)

Tom: Nest year! (laugh)

Take: No actually I’ve tried couple of times when I was living in Florida. I tried every year, but I couldn’t make it through.

Tom: I hear you. I share your pain.

Take: (laugh)

Tom: Because I tried and I never could make it through either.

Take: Tom, time is up. We’ll talk next month.

Tom: Yes. We’ll talk during the British Open and that’s going to be exciting because the Muirfield is also a great test of golf.
